Granny Square Floral For Spoonflower

Last week I designed two collections for the Spoonflower Granny Square challenge. I had no idea how I was going to create a faux-crochet effect. Looking at the challenge entries, I am amazed at the different ways designers achieved this.

My floral granny square has hundreds of layers. Each line, each petal. Whew! I knew that there would be lots of bright, colorful designs. So I decided to go with something softer. I am very happy with how this design turned out.

Voting is open now through the 30th. Yikes! The 30th? The 30-Day Creative Challenge is right around the corner! 🙂

I designed the basket weave first. And I think I will go back and increase the size of the pom-pom. It seems too small. WIth this design, I think the brighter colors work better. Which do you like best?

It works. It’s a working, repeating pattern. It’s not one of my favorites though. I know what I need to do to fix it. I was tempted not to turn it in. But I read a reminder… done is better than perfect. Actually, I came across that quote by two different artists this week.

So I entered it in the Spoonflower Eclectic Witch Challenge. I can always go back and update the design. And I am very happy with the simple, slightly off kilter plaid. I can use that as a base in other designs, and I can recolor it.

I took the basic shape of a witches hat, and a face. I thought of adding shapes for a face. Simple circles or lines. Tried it, and decided to stay more abstract. I meant to add a secondary bloom, slightly smaller. But after I made the Dandelion, sizing it down lost some of the detail. I’m not happy with both of the “blooms” being roughly the same size.

The collection shows the parts of this design. I started with a solid, added the plaid, added the dandi’s, and finished with the wandflowers. There is an actual wandflower, and the colors are sort of the same. A fluke. I was looking for flower names after I had completed the design. Kismet. 😆

Voting is open now until the 23rd. I already have a handful of favorite votes, so maybe it is not as icky as I think. The next challenge is going to be very difficult. “Granny Square Crochet”. More learning ahead!

My entry for the Spoonflower Retro Floral Curtain Design Challenge. Yes, this looks familiar. I used some of the same blooms from the retro pillow challenge, but changed the palette.

I tried to do a more natural pussy willow design. Twiggy and delicate. But everything I have worked on this week has turned to muck. 😆 What could go wrong, has. With time running out, I decided to recycle.

Even then, more problems. My strokes, outlines, were messy and uneven on about half of the smaller blooms. And unfortunately, I hadn’t noticed until after I had duplicated many times. Uggh. I didn’t know what was wrong, so my fixes weren’t fixing. The only thing to do was to start over. Voila. 🤓

I tried a texture on the background. It looked great, but the seam was showing. For some reason it was not lining up to create a seamless pattern.
