Sweet Dreams are Mod of this

The Spoonflower design challenge this week was to create a Mod wallpaper. A design influenced by the modernist subculture of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. This was a limited palette of three colors with the option of using black or white as a fourth.

The first image that popped into my head when I read the challenge, was of Go-Go dancers in mini’s and white patent leather boots. Mod was often about bright, vivid, in-your-face color. Geometric patterns in black and white were popular as well. I wanted to design a large-scale print, and I wanted soft instead of garish.

This is what I came up with. I tried several color combinations, and in the end, I used just two shades of yellow, and the purple accent.

Spoonflower/Fabric8 Geek Chic semi finals. You can help make my goal a reality!

I received great news  – I made it to the semi finals of this weeks Spoonflower design contest. There were over 750 entries, and those have been narrowed down to 100 finalists.

It is sponsored by Spoonflower and Robert Kaufman Fabrics. Semifinalists were announced May 9, 2013. Voting in the semifinal round will be open to the public from May 9-15. Eight finalists will be asked to expand their design into a four-piece collection. The winner from the group of eight finalists will be offered a contract from Robert Kaufman Fabrics along with $1000 advance against royalties, as well as a Wacom professional digital drawing tablet.

This is the design I entered. The theme is Geek Chic, fabric designs that celebrate nerd/geek culture. I call it Geek Garden.
