This postcard is a save. I started with burnt umber gouache and plastic wrap. The color dried to a yucky, blech brown, and I had no idea what I could do to make it better. I got the idea of barnacles, and used negative painting to bring out the shapes. Still blech. The tube of red acrylic was sitting in front of me… BAM.

I added green, blue, yellow. I used brushes, and embossing tools. The embossing tools make great, uniform shapes. The yellow dots on white were too close in value, so I added a black outline to get them to pop. I also outlined the card in black because I know it will be shown on a white wall

Finally I added copper dots to catch the light. The white dots are glossy acrylic. A mistake really, I picked up the wrong bottle, but I like the shine. I think this card would look great in the  Visual Aids 17th ANNUAL POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE.

It’s beginning to look a lot like ChRiStMaS.

Paper Preparedness

I am a watercolor artist, but this is not about watercolor paper. Still, this paper is important to my creativity. It needs to be strong, durable and absorbent. Any guesses?

I am talking paper towels people.

I found these towels, I don’t know, about two years ago. Then I ran out and when I went to buy more… I could not remember which brand I had purchased.  Yes I am forgetful. Yes I am getting older. But that is not why I forgot. I forgot because it took me SO LONG to use them all.

I know, this is not a life shattering cure for the common cold. But I was ECSTATIC when I finally found the paper towel I was looking for.

OK, so enough teasing Sheila, tell us already. My perfect paper towel, is the Walmart store brand. I had tried a cheaper generic brand, but I was replacing the paper each time I worked, and often several times in the same session. These towels are thick, and really last, sometimes for weeks. I can fold them over, and use a clean side, and, fold and repeat!

I take them off the roll, and fold them in half, three times. This is the perfect size for my desk. I also place an old wash cloth under the paper towel. I use my desk for the computer as well, but I keep my tools at the ready.

Paper towels are not just for cleaning up arty messes, check out my Google+ friend Val’s post. Awesome ideas for creating! Paper Towels and Other Things.

Toil and Trouble

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

When I was in high school, I shocked a friend by knowing the word cauldron. We were playing Pictionary. He drew the picture, and announced to the group, “She’ll never get this one!”

I blurted out the answer, Roger’s jaw dropped, and everyone had a good laugh. I have a fondness for the word cauldron. It reminds me of good friends.

I have painted regularly since the end of the September challenge. A whole lotta’ toil and trouble with nothing, not even a frog toe to show. I reclaimed several small canvases, only to cover them up with mud and muck. Time for more gesso. And more practice painting with a palette knife.

While I was watching an online class on Photoshop, I started goofing with some paint. It was a beginners class, and much of it I knew.

So this is just a bit of play…
