The light on the mountains today was spectacular. Snow was visible in some of the crevices. The variation in colors made me think of the countertops everyone is so crazy about now.  WOW!

This photo does not do it justice. Five minutes later, the front range was bright gold, and the back range was indigo. At sunset, both were a solid mass of indigo, with a deep pink sky behind.  Breathtaking!

Well, it’s here. It’s official. I am officially middle age. If my prediction proves true and I live to be 100. Today is my BIG-FIVE-OH. But I am cool with that. Don’t feel fifty, that’s for dang sure. It’s going to be just another 30 in 30 day. The celebration will come at the end of the month when I am with friends in San Diego.

Although, I might just have to head to Jerry’s Artarama and treat myself to something. They sent a birthday email about a free surprise gift (with purchase). Free surprise huh… who can resist?

To the east, we have a view of Granite Mountain. There are a few other peaks, I still need to learn their names. Granite mountain is an hour away, still it looks huge. It is over 7,600 feet. These hills are not all part of the same range.

Happy Accidents

The cloud was a fluke, it is the white of the paper where my wash dried before meeting. The purple on the mountains was meant to completely cover them. But once I saw the shapes forming, I laid the tilted paper flat. I really like how the dark gives some structure to the hills. When the photo is enlarged on-screen, you can see the faintest red on the hills. I know it is an illusion, but it is an interesting one.

The reference photo for this was taken in September.  I so wished I could paint that sky. Finally worked up the courage to try. Should call this a study, as I will be painting it again. Also because I learned a lot while working on it.

After the Storm.

After the Storm.

Thought I botched it good (see right). Added a wash over the entire sky and felt better. Then I added the puffy clouds. They look a little cartoony to me. Maybe I just need to add a few more. Or make them bigger. Or? They are showing as white, but they are a lighter shade of the same peachy pink. I will keep that in mind for next time. Happy with the rest, and the experience!

Here is a peek at the 4 x 4 canvas I mentioned. I LOVE how the white paint formed little circles (near the center). How did I do that? Wish I knew so I could do it again! Very excited about this little, whatever it is going to become.
