Hello Again

Mingus Mountains, SMD 2017

Missed you Mingus

I arrived home from California after dark last night. An accident stopped traffic for nearly an hour near Quartzsite. I said prayers for the injured and was thankful that medical help was close by them. Didn’t get to see the mountains until this morning.

Being on the road longer than anticipated wasn’t all bad. Sunset was spectacular.

I hadn’t planned to be away so long. I waited along with my good friends, for the arrival of their grandson. Baby’s birth was imminent. There were contractions for goodness sake! But still no baby. He is having fun teasing us.

The shower was a huge success. The canvas I painted looks great in the nursery. I had a blurry photo of the crib quilt to work from. I used the stylized branches and leaves. The palette is based on the quilt as well.

I came home with a few good deals and an awesome made-in-U.S.A.-by-a-Native-American-and- Veteran-of-the-United-States-Army, pencil and brush holder. I had an idea and told my friend about it. What he built trumped my complicated idea. I purchased pencil holders from the Dollar Tree, and he did the rest. (He is taking orders BTW.)

I had these items in baskets on my desk. I liked the look, but it was taking up valuable work space. Now I can quickly free up more space, and everything is closer at hand. Love it! I am thinking of painting or staining it. I love the raw natural wood, but you can never have enough color!

I managed to do some sketching for pattern ideas. I worked on some small watercolors sketches too. Still catching up on email and visiting blogs to see the 30 in 30 collages. I missed you all so much!

At the start of the challenge, I had a “grand plan”. I recently discovered a new technique. At least, new to me. Laly Mille has an encaustic inspired method. I have long been wanting to work in encaustic, so I was really excited when I read her post.

I worked to get ahead on the challenge. I started with five small canvases. Mini Mingus views. And guess what. I bombed. That’s what I get for getting too ambitious. And for not practicing on just one first. One failure would have been easier to take!

From day one, I felt behind schedule. And slightly dissappointed. I hoped to post the January pieces for sale.  I will try the technique again. I think I can salvage the duds.

If you have been reading my posts, you know I have had a lot of duds this month. Many “do-over’s”. The big surprise is. I am happy with everything I have worked on this month. Somehow, it all worked out.

Here are my favorites.

The days with the most page views were: 3, 4, 7, 13, 17, 20, 21. Day 21 was the highest by far.  What was your favorite?

I am so grateful to all of you who followed along with me this month. Your observations and comments helped to carry me through the difficult days. Such a blessing to wake up and be greeted by friends!  (Made new friends too!) Thank you for taking the time.

I have gone way over my data limit, so I will not be commenting on the collages until I return home. I will catch up though! No posts until then as well. I did bring a few supplies with me, and I will be painting when I can.

Happy resting if you are going to rest! Joyful creating to you always! Blessed 2017 to all!

I have noticed a pattern here. The canvas I posted yesterday, was the first in the batch of 4 x 4’s. I thought it was the best of those. This was the first of four, and again, I feel it is the best.

I need to stop trying so hard. I think that is the lesson. I think on these first attempts, I was just doing, and not thinking. Or maybe I was trying  too hard on those that followed, to recreate the “magic” somehow. Which is impossible.

So happy to end on a positive note. January has been a productive month. Thank you Leslie Saeta! Tomorrow I will be posting a collage of my favorites. The artists who took part will also be posting their collage of 30 paintings.

Happy day thirty and happy Monday!
