Back to the flowers. And more practice with the orange rocks.

I have as much fun on the sky, as I do with the flowers in these. For this sky I mixed three different blues, and I really am pleased how it turned out.  Just now noticed a floating bloom on the right, I’ll have to go in and mend that.

While unpacking, I came across a treasure from my childhood. I literally have not seen it in decades. A small handmade book of Haiku. I couldn’t help but laugh when I read my contribution.

Flowers

The flowers are in
bloom. Their colors are bright and
pretty. Pink, Blue, Red.

Guess I wasn’t as much of a tomboy as I thought. I have a sneaking suspicion the theme was a prompt. There are several flower haiku included in this prestigious volume!

Mr. Sandow put a lot of work into this. I am sure the cardboard pieces were pre-cut, and the spine is actually stitched. I do remember him screen printing the covers. Magic, that process to my 5th grade self! I am sure he had no idea that my love of art and words, and books meant that I would keep this protected all these years.

Well, maybe he does now. I found Mr. Sandow’s obituary online. He passed in 2004. He taught for over 30 years, received awards for his service. He was married for over 60 years, and served in the Army during WWII.

Rest in Peace Mr. Sandow. Thanks for being a great teacher, and encouraging creativity in your students!

Day 15 – Wanna Be

I wanna be better.

Worked on three pieces today.  Finished two, but both felt flat. This is one of them. Started this at about 10:30 pm, finished by 11 including the editing. Looks so, juvenile to me. I like the soft clouds, and the greenery. But the rock is lacking oomph.

I know what I did wrong. Just wondering, if I know, why didn’t I just do it right? I wanted more of a sketchy feel. My pen marks are stiff and too dark. My shadows are stiff as well. There I am trying to “copy” the details from the photo instead of just feeling my way through the shapes.

Laughing at myself, because I have better paintings I could have posted. But here it is, day 15. Let’s see how much my Sedona scenes improve by next September’s challenge! I hope, I hope.

Here is a cloud shot I love. Maybe it will help to erase the memory of this mediocre little piece. Ha!

Day 14 – Purple Reign

This is the second of the flower series. Painted the same day, after Day 12. I showed the yellow flowers yesterday, because I did not want this to suffer by comparison to the first purple piece. I went much darker on this. Intentionally. I like both Day 12 and Purple Reign, for different reasons.

Which do your prefer?

I am having fun with these flowerscapes. I painted them while standing, unusual for me. I had to raise my desk, to accommodate my Raskog cart. Now the desk is too high for my chair, (I’m shopping the sales for an office chair). Standing has helped me to work loose. I am having so much fun, I want to go larger!

Thanks for stopping by!
