Mail Art and Mailed Art

Today was my lucky day! My mailbox was filled with a rich chocolate color handmade envelope. Inside it were these wonderful postcards.

These gorgeous papers from Nepal were inside too. The sun is a handmade postcard, and the fish are a piece of stationary on beautifully textured paper. Their bright sunny colors just bring a smile to my face. The papers have such a terrific texture, and the stationary is translucent.

These were gifts from my friend Teresa Harrington Hazelbaker. We met through Kat Sloma’s Liberate your Art postcard exchange. She also included a small magnet with her colorful art on it. I keep some of my art supplies in a metal chartreuse bucket on my desk, and this compliments it perfectly!

I was so happy to receive this surprise in my mail. So honored too that Teresa would share the Nepalese treasures with me. They were gifts from her niece who traveled to Nepal. Thanks so much Teresa! Blessings in my mailbox!

Bee mounted

Carpenter Bee. 6 x 6 watercolor on 140 lb. cold pressed paper, mounted on a cradled wood panel.

I am heading to the post office to send my carpenter bee to Hamburg Germany. The exhibition is an effort to raise money and awareness for the dwindling bee populations world-wide. It will be held May 8th – May 28th at the Galerie Faszination Art.

I painted the cradle board a yellow ochre that I think compliments the bright colors in the artwork. This is the first time I have mounted a watercolor, and I am so pleased with how it turned out!

Signed, sealed, and soon to be delivered!

Wishing you all a super weekend!

I created this  for the 16th Annual Postcards from the Edge benefit for Visual AIDS. The Luhring Augustine Gallery is hosting the event January 25-26, 2014. Each work will be available for $85.00. The gallery will be displaying the artwork anonymously and the identity of the artist is only revealed after it is purchased.

By participating in Postcards From the Edge artists and collectors support the activities of Visual AIDS, enabling the organization to produce AIDS-focused contemporary art programs and provide supplies and assistance to artists living with HIV/AIDS, many who are unable to continue producing work without such support. All proceeds support the programs of Visual Aids.

Visual AIDS – Statement of Values

Visual AIDS is the only contemporary arts organization fully committed to HIV prevention and AIDS awareness through producing and presenting visual art projects, while assisting artists living with HIV/AIDS. We are committed to preserving and honoring the work of artists with HIV/AIDS and the artistic contributions of the AIDS movement. We embrace diversity and difference in our staff, leadership, artists and audiences.

In the fight against AIDS, we believe:

  • Effective AIDS advocacy seeks to address the underlying and related issues that contribute to and exacerbate the pandemic, such as poverty, homophobia and racism.
  • Our work affirms the visibility, dignity and rights of people living with HIV and AIDS.
  • HIV/AIDS prevention is about harm reduction that is guided by science, not ideology.
  • We draw from the deep history of art activism, as with our Red Ribbon Project and Day With(out) Art.
  • Visual AIDS promotes art that is public, inclusive and accessible.
  • Art that takes risks promotes and encourages reflection, dialogue and action.

Change of Plan

I started this piece by creating the black marks with a length of twig, and acrylic paint. I drew them vertically, intending to create loose, free form trees. When the paint had dried, I rotated the paper, and the hills were visible to me immediately. I resisted the temptation to add details.

Sea Dean’s Art Party – Day 9

I have worked on a series of small images for this art party. I may use them as gift tags, or attach them to card stock for greetings. This wreath is a bit wonky, but I like it. And sometimes in life, Christmas creations come out wonky. But we still hang them on the Christmas tree! What do you think? Should I send this to the island of misfit toys? Maybe if I add a big red bow, the wonkiness will be less noticeable!

Have a terrific Tuesday!

Patti Digh – January Book Release

WOO WHOO!

I am in! I just received word that one/or both of my paintings are in  The Geography of Loss: Embrace What Is, Honor What Was, Love What Will Be. By Patti Digh. I sent the submissions in September of 2012. I thought the jury process had long since ended, and just figured I had not been selected.

When I saw the letter in my box, I thought it was an invitation to take part in a new project. I am so happy! And on top of that AMAZING news, I will receive a free copy of the book when it is released in mid-January.

Here is the artwork I created for the themes they supplied. One had to do with maps, and the other was on how we handle loss. I believe this is Patti’s fifth book, and in each of them, she invites artists from around the world to take part in the illustration.

Wishing you all a very Happy weekend – filled with Happy news!
