Soul Art 2016

This year, my soul art came in pieces. My day was sliced in half. I did the guided journey work in the morning, and returned to paint in the evening. I had a slightly stressful afternoon, and sitting down to paint was such a treat.

I turned on Laura‘s closing hang out, and listened as I worked. These are 6 x 6 inches squares, and the small one is an ATC, 2.5 x 3.5 inches.

The first two are pieces I had abandoned months ago. While reaching for a clean sheet of paper, I saw their colorful corners sticking out. Were they calling to me?

I pulled them out of my paper stash, and looked at them for a long time. The top one only had the base colors on it, and some yellow crayon marks. The second, had just the blue.

My five topics, the things that came to mind first:
Color, ocean, faces, flowers, pattern.
I did not have magazines handy, so I pulled images from Pinterest. The images that called to me are here.

The five descriptions are cheerful, thoughtful, bold, flowing, sensual.

I did not consciously think of these while painting, but you can see that some of them are present in the work.

The two bottom pieces were really all about play. The ATC started as an abstract.

None of these are finished works. I think I may take a cue  from Dotty Seiter, and they may show up as part of a collage!

You can read more about my Soul Art experience in Laura Hollick’s Soul Art Gallery. I am still catching up on the Facebook posts and reading about the other artists in the gallery. Several of you mentioned signing up. If you were able to take part, please comment with a link so I can visit!

I wanted to try again with this idea. Yesterday, I felt that the flowers were much to dark after adding the pen. These are better, but now I think they look very Dr. Seuss. I love Dr. Seuss, but that was not the look I was going for. There is a lot of great texture in the branches and the background. 72 ppi smooths it out unfortunately.

This time, on the background I did  7 or 8 layers of splatter. Pink, orange, and water. I let that dry and did them all again. Once or twice more for good measure. Oh and I added a watery dark rust color, hoping for a sort of, dirty aged effect. I really like how it turned out.  I wanted to show a detail, but it just does not translate in the scan well.

As a study, this was successful. As a painting I am not so sure.

MINERAL PAPER

Yupo and Mineral paper are both sort of plastic in feel. Yupo is very smooth and slick while Mineral paper has a soft, “fuzzy” feel. Sort of like a peach, or velvet.  Yupo is a synthetic paper made from polypropylene pellets. You can learn more about Yupo here.

There are a lot of artists who use Yupo. Two of my favorites are Yevgenia Watts, and Sandy Sandy. Connie Cagley sometimes works on Mineral paper.

Mineral paper is made from rocks. You can find it online and at Hobby Lobby.

When I first tried Yupo, I wasn’t sure I would like it. But now, after painting on it all month during the September challenge, I feel more comfortable with it. I am feeling more at ease with Mineral paper each time I use it as well.

A few of my observations:

Yupo can easily be wiped clean and reused, as seen below.  Mineral paper stains more easily, but you are still able to wipe it off, and reuse it. (Middle image on the bottom.) It also tears easily, which could be great for mixed media and collage.

I hope that answers some of your questions Corinna. Let me know if there is anything else you are curious about. My number one tip for anyone who tries these papers, is to use them several times, to get accustomed to their individual properties.

Finally catching up, my Pinterest board
for this challenge is over 450 strong!

Visit Leslie’s site, where all the daily art is posted,
and see her terrific art as well.

I sure do appreciate you visiting my blog!

September Recap

I am feeling sort of discombobulated. Fuddled. Rattled. With my missing September posts. Still hoping they will return. (Server issues)

I thought I would recap, mostly for myself, but also for visitors new to the blog.

September was a prolific month for me. Thanks to Leslie Saeta and her 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge. Hundreds of artists took part, painting and posting their work each day.

A quick look at my daily paintings. All were done in watercolor. Most of them on Yupo, but a couple were on paper. I am so happy with the work I produced this month.

My favorites from the month. Most of these were happy accidents.

My good friend and fellow artist Cindy Williams shared her top ten list of my paintings, take a peek. We agreed on many of them! I had so much fun painting sunflowers. I painted on scraps, and gave them away as bookmarks to my followers.

I just finished a large canvas for a friend, I will share that with you tomorrow.
