Postcard Pilfering

I received a beautiful picture postcard from Christine Brooks, and I knew I wanted to paint the image. An Ibis, walking in a cross walk. Such a graphic composition. Just noticed I have him walking on the edge of the cross walk.

I was intimidated about trying to paint this bird. But again, the sketchbook made it less about “grand” perfection, and more about practice. I’m pretty happy with my first Ibis. Thanks Christine, for the surprise!

It’s here. Leslie’s painting challenge starts in three days. Last week I thought about my palette for the challenge. I don’t think my color choices have changed much since the September Round. To get it straight in my head, and to find out which supplies I need, I made a color chart. I used a hinge pin to dab the paint on. Less mess.

Acrylic color chart.

Now I can clearly see what I have in stock, and which paints are gloss or matte. I reorganized my art cart, most used items close at hand. You all know how much I love to organize, LOL. I even started a couple of small pieces.

So why do I feel so antsy?

Have you been to Dollar Tree lately? They have collage papers in stock. Three colorways in multiple patterns. Pretty nifty.

I know what you mean Carol. I have been prepping in bits and pieces. Even though the color chart and organizing paint took some time. I feel all wound up, like I am off to the races or something. Probably this list of projects I am trying to finish before the first. And it isn’t all going to happen. LOL 😉 So glad I will see you there!

I was in a “dollar store and more” yesterday that had some cool papers too, they even had oval canvas which is rare up here. I also love your bird. It reminds me of Sydney, Australia where they flock the harbors in droves. You have a way with comical. He’s fun.

I think it is awesome, that the dollar stores are starting to carry craft supplies! I know they will always be limited by pricing, but it makes more available to kids and students, and makes creativity a viable option. Wow, oval canvas, that is a find!

I love that you see something comical!! Such a wonderful compliment 🙂

Hi Sheila. Sorry it’s been awhile. Still trying to figure what to do with the rest of my life. We are seriously considering moving back to States. Anyway, that’s a whole different story.
I love your Ibis! The colors, the composition! And it was very smart of you to make the color chart. I know you did it to see exactly what you have to work with, but you learn so much about the color itself by placing it on a chart like that. The more we understand color, the more we can express it our own personal way. I’m a bit antsy too about the challenge. I so want to commit to it and I so enjoy the camaraderie and seeing everyone’s art and feeling their inspiring energy. I really would like to do portraits all month, but there’s no way I could do something of any quality in just a daily painting. I don’t know. We shall see, but no matter what happens I’m with you on the ride.

WOW Laurelle! You ARE in a transition. I mam sure it is stressful, but how exciting too! I can’t take credit on the color and comp, that was all Christine’s photo. Such a dork I did not include it. And you are right about the colors on the chart, they look so different once dry. So glad to hear you might do the challenge. Sign up, and do what you have done before, show your work in progress. Sounds like the conversations might be something you need right now. You know, friends on your side 😉 Wishing you guidance and strength and… the very best in your endeavors 😉

Ooh, that’s a cool painting, Sheila!! 🙂 It is easier to use an art journal sometimes..you don’t have to worry about mucking it up, so the pressure is off.

I thought I was organized because I have my jars of paint sitting on the shelf by color, and the colors that go best together are side by side. haha But, wow..now I find out you’re waay ahead of me. 😉 😀 I’ve never thought of making a painting chart. I better get on that (just kidding, but I am tempted)! 😉 lol

Laughing out loud Katie! You are light years ahead of me in experience and output and about fifty other things. 😉 LOL. Chalk it up to my foggy Lupus, getting old forgetful brain. I had to make it easier to see. (It’s right in front of your face! LOL) My colors are grouped, but that going together thing, I need to jump on that, LOL!

Sheila, TOTALLY love this ibis up on an i-beam on a city skyscraper under construction—just awesome!

Your 30 in 30 palette knocks my socks off. And, since my socks are off, I think I’ll go take a nap.

Yikes! I really didn’t notice that Feb. and the challenge is coming so soon; fortunately I am pretty must set in what I plan to do. I like your Ibis – he is fun. Our crosswalks aren’t that colour so your comment was a surprise. I think all the DollarTrees carry different stuff – lol. Have a good night Sheila!

Awesome Val, can’t wait to follow your daily posts 🙂 That’s true you never know what you will find at Dollar tree. I think that is part of why I find them fun. They have added a lot of cool crafting supplies lately 😉
