Had some errands today, so I did not have time to work on the clouds. Sat down to paint at 10 pm. Getting later and later aren’t I? Spent a half hour thinking about starting a painting. Decided to do a sketch and see if it would be worth posting. Maybe not, but it is Day 13.
I pulled out my waterbrush, watercolor crayons. Oh, and a couple of watercolor pencils. This is the result. I have a pad of the mixed media paper, bought on sale, and this is the second sheet I have used. I really like it. Wondering why I haven’t used it more often.
I added a bit to the foreground of yesterday’s work. I just felt like I had three separate pieces, instead of an integrated painting. Sky, hill, grass. So just a bit of indigo, to add shadow, and reflect a bit of the hills. Don’t know if it was successful, but I like it better.
Here is the original.
Maybe it is too busy now. Do you think it should just be a light solid wash over the entire area?
Enjoy your day!

Your sky is amazing! And I do like the indigo in the foreground. I think it is fun to pull things out you bought and actually use it. Thats been what i’ve been trying to do as well i’m such an art supply horder. I could not buy anything for 5 years and could still paint daily. lol time to use it up.
LOL Me too Diane! Everything looks so pretty when it is new and it is nice have “full” supplies. But I bought it to use it, right? Ha ha
Yeah, sounds like you need to get busy! LOL Have fun this weekend 🙂
Sheila, hats off to you for 10 minutes at 1000p—love that you did a quick sketch and posted. Like Marion, I rarely sketch. Tell me what mixed media paper is and what you like about it.
I traveled to VA today! I’m surrounded by all the art of my granddaughters—yay!
Wasn’t sure myself so I looked it up.
By combining the characteristics of watercolor paper with the finish of a drawing sheet, Strathmore has created a paper that performs like no other. Strathmore Mixed Media paper offers true wet media performance on a dry media finish — ideal for any mixed media application, including watercolors, gouache, acrylics, graphite, pen and ink, colored pencils, markers, pastels, collage, and more. For studies or finished art, this heavyweight, 140 lb (300 gsm) paper features a vellum surface.
The paint moves smoothly over the suface. The Arches I usually work on is rough, which I like very much also. I like how some of the marks are still visible, and I was able to add a second layer in some areas. Actaully 4 layers in the farthest hills. And the paper did not buckle! It did curl some overnight, but I think it will straghten out nicely.
Oh Joy! I know you will have fun and I am so excited that we might get a peek when you return. Happy weekend Dotty 🙂
Sheila, thanks for the detailed empirically-based response; nothing like having a personal shopper to guide me! I’ve added this to my rapidly expanding supplies wishlist : )
LOL, glad you appreciate my in depth research. That was c/o the Blick site I believe. LOL They call it vellum surface, but it is different from vellum paper. It is very smooth. I have added some items to my wishlist this challenge too 🙂
Sketching, that is something I do not do enough of – or ever if the truth be told.
Your sunset sky – What a delicious sky colour. The indigo certainly helped in fact maybe could be a tad darker? Two things to be careful of – the kiss of the two mountain ranges on the right and the square shape inbetween the two ranges – I can’t quite make that out. Hope it doesn’t sound like I am critcising, I really like it your colours are great and you’ve nailed that hard to achieve simplicity. Somethig I need to learn LOL!
Marion
The indigo was much darker when wet, of course. And I prefer it darker on the hills, but I was trying to resist the urge and keep it fresh. I tend to over work things. You nailed it Marion. I have done both of those areas much better on other paintings. They could definitely use improvement 🙂 Have fun today with your painting 🙂
Hi Sheila. It is such a challenge to manage to get some art done in our busy days. Maybe more of us should do 10 minute exercises – to loosen up or to just try something new. I think adding the indigo to the foreground works well in the other painting.- Have a good day!
Well, it was all I could muster, but I wanted to play. Enjoy your day Val and happy creating to you! Glad the blue works. 🙂
First off I don’t know how you can still think about painting at 10 at night. Oh OH, my old age is showing. Anyway I like the simplicity. I think that the dark pushes the lighter forward and I do like how you have integrated some of the indigo into the forward landscape. Isn’t it funny how we have stuff and we don’t really know what it is or why we don’t use it more? But like clothes, we never have the right thing!!
You made me laugh Nelvia. Never have the right thing. Too true! I am a night owl. But I WAS tired last night. I think I will be using that paper again today. Have fun with your work today, look forward to seeing it. 🙂
