I thought about not posting this. I want to rework the flowers. I couldn’t decide about the flower heads, so I tried them two different ways. I am leaning towards the loose swirly ones. Right now it just looks like a big yellow, mess. I need to think about it a few days, and figure something else out.

I think the pot saves this from the trash pile. I really like how all of that texture showed up. That little purple spot on the right was a mistake. I wiped off some paint while it was still wet, But I liked it, so I left it in. The background was about three different colors. Well, three main colors. When it was a loss, I went ahead and tried a soft green. Guacamole gone bad. Yuck.

Then I saw a bottle of crackle paint, and thought what the heck. I have used the two-step crackle before for craft projects, but this was new to me. I forgot that if you apply a thicker layer you will get bigger cracks. Didn’t bother to read the instructions until after it had dried.

And just as I knew it would happen, the cracks were barely visible without adding a top coat in a contrasting color. You can do light over dark or dark over light, just as long as there is a contrast. I opted for indigo, of course. Hoped it would tie in with the pot. I just put a small amount of  the indigo on a damp paper towel and rubbed it over the area.

I will probably wake up tomorrow and cringe at knowing I actually posted this. But there it is. I also painted another bookmark contender. And Sea, I used my water brush. I am going to save that for tomorrow. It is going to be a busy day, and I might not have time to paint.

Congratulations everyone! Almost there!

I think the background turned out just fine, sort of weathered but I like it. I wonder if adding some blue between the flowers would help define them and add to the cohesiveness of the whole painting – might be worth a try if you are thinking trash anyway.

Good idea Val. I need to pull out the shapes, define them better. Thanks for chiming in, always appreciate your opinions 🙂

I like the crackle finish…and I’m loling at how you read the directions after applying it! The adventurous way to do it! Sometimes what we think looks like goofs (guacamole gone bad, so funny) work great after all. Neat shadows on the vase and the smidge of purple is a nice little surprise.

Love the crackle, both color and texture. Love the surface feel of the vase. Love the scrambled eggs effect of the flowers—the yellow and orange scramble is very appealing. I like the definition offered by your flower centers and I like that you tried two different ways to represent the centers. Your thought to choose one or the other, rather than keep both, resonates with me.

    So glad you posted.

Sheila, you are WAY too hard on yourself. One of the things I like about you is that you have guts! You didn’t want to post, but you did. That says a lot. As far as this piece, I love the crackle effect. Good idea! And the vase has wonderful things going on, too! The flowers have character, and I really like the whole thing. You have a unique and wonderful style!

I love the crackling effect – I just bought some crackling stuff last week and am looking forward to using it. I too posted something today that I wasn’t overly happy with, but it’s all in the spirit of the challenge – having a go at something! Your pot is lovely too!

Wendy we can “hang” our yucky paintings side by side in solidarity! It was fun waiting for the crack to appear. Drys fast, well I helped it a bit with the heat gun. Better luck today, have fun!
