I may have totally flubbed this. Her face… not sure it works. I think I am not comfortable with it, because I tried to create it from thin air. Only the mouth was there, barely. I was thinking of leaving her featureless. Let me know what you think.
This started with leftover acrylic paint. Then a layer of watercolor, covered with plastic wrap. I used more watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and pen.
Here is a short slide show for you. I darkened the lips. Figure, with a hat like that you need bold lips too.
The hat, and her shoulders stood out. It took a long time to figure out if she was facing me, or to the left.
I named her Vale. She looks as if she is using the hat as one. And she reminds me of Bette Davis in Now Voyager. Her character name was Charlotte Vale. She goes from being a wallflower, to a fashion plate. There is more to the story, but one of the key scenes is when she is revealed. It is all about the hat, and the shoes.
I also revised Ardent Daydream. Added an outline to the top of the hat. I had it sitting on my desk, and it was bothering me. So I fixed it.
Happy painting, and a safe 9-11 to all. Check out Leslie’s blog for today’s creations.
When I saw this one, Vale, I immediately smiled and thought Happy! I don’t know why either ‘cos she looks rather serious or maybe a bit surprised at a second take 🙂 This is another good one! You’re going to have to keep this up hey.. LOL the pressure is on now! We are expecting great things from you Sheila.. hehe Have a brilliant day and may your muse stay with you for ever! 🙂
Thanks a lot! OK you DID make my day earlier, but now. Pressure! Ok, I will try… but I changed it up a bit today (13th)… landscape. So glad you thought “Happy”. Happy is always good 🙂
A little tweaking of the face and Vale is ready to go! Love ardent. Thank you for your information too on psd’s.
Thank you Susan, If you need more help just let me know. 🙂
Sheila dear friend, Vale needs a face and you aren’t that far off. You have her lips slanting the opposite direction. I am wondering if you fixed that if it would work then. You have no idea how many scrubbed paintings I have. LOL…learning never stops.
hmmm… I am going to contact you Carol… Thank you 🙂
Love the slide show! She comes to life like magic. I received some Yupo paper from Sandy also. I have yet to explore with it.
Pam go for it! With watercolor, if you mess up, you just wipe it off and start over. Your work would be amazing on Yupo!
I think her lips need to be darker like the heart on her hat and outlined in black. For some reason the slide show isn’t working for me???
Oh…now it worked. I like the faceless look, too. But I’m kind of partial to faceless paintings. 🙂 So, my opinion is either faceless (which is stunning), or bolder with the facial features. 🙂
Oh good, I am glad. I did save high res files of each slide. I like that faceless, it is all about the shapes. I think I was getting to literal, since there were no wrinkles to play of off.
Bummer, it is probably a setting on your computer… I will ask a friend and see if I can get an answer for you. I am glad you see her finished though. I actually did the final lips digitally, I didn’t want to ruin it. I added color from the hat, but at about 40% opacity. I will try it darker and see what it looks like. I did not even see that there was a heart. But you are right Karin!
I like Bale with all of her features. I think your strong sense of design is evident in this painting. And Bette! Brilliant actress.
Thanks Jim 🙂 Bette kills it in that movie, she does in all of them though!
